5 Benefits of Owning a Rottweiler Puppy

Are you thinking about getting a Rottweiler puppy?

Rottweilers are not the right dog for everyone, but if you are the right kind of person then owning a Rottweiler can have a lot of benefits. Here are the top 5 benefits of owning a Rottweiler puppy:

1. You get a great guard dog – Rottweilers are fiercely protective of their homes and their people so if you want to have a dog that is going to be a great guard dog and a great pet then you can’t go wrong owning a Rottweiler.

2. You get a companion – Rottweiler puppies are very people oriented and love to be right in the middle of all the action. Your Rottweiler puppy will be happiest when he or she is tagging along with you as you run errands, mow the yard, make dinner, or watch TV on the couch. Rottweilers are wonderful companion dogs, although because they do thrive on human companionship if you don’t have a lot of time to spend with the dog then you might be better off with a less people-oriented breed of dog.

3. Your kids get a playmate – Rottweiler puppies are very active, and need to be intellectually stimulated with games and tasks. If you want a family dog that will be active as your kids then a Rottweiler puppy will be a good fit in your household. Your Rottweiler puppy will love to play as much as your kids, and you’ll know that the kids are safe from danger with a loyal Rottweiler guarding them while they play.

4. You get a dog that loves to work – Rottweilers are bred to be working dogs and they need a job to do in order to be truly happy. If you want a dog that can help you around the farm, protect your property, and do other jobs then a Rottweiler will be a good fit for you. But you must keep your Rottweiler busy in order for the dog to really thrive.

5. You get a dog that is smarter than most – Rottweilers are known for their intelligence so if you want a dog that is more intelligent than most other breeds and is easy to train and will be obedient and respectful of your authority then a Rottweiler is the dog for you. You need to train your Rottweiler from day one and establish yourself as the pack leader. Once you do that your dog will pick up lessons easily and obey commands.

Tips on Caring for Rottweiler Puppies

Caring for and feeding Rottweiler puppies properly is very important because a puppy needs a good start in order to grow into a healthy, happy dog. Rottweiler puppies have some very specific needs that you need to be aware of before you bring home a new Rottweiler puppy. Here are some tips on caring for and feeding a Rottweiler puppy:

1. Proper vet care and vaccinations are essential. Make sure that you see your vet soon after you bring your new puppy home and keep the puppy on a strict vaccination schedule.

2. Always feed a high quality food to your puppy. When you bring your puppy home make sure that you continue feeding the puppy that same food that the breeder uses. If you want to change the puppy’s food do it slowly. Add just a handful of the new food to the old food and then gradually start adding more and more of the new food. If you switch the brands too quickly your puppy could get sick.

3. Socialization is crucial for Rottweiler puppies. Rottweiler puppies should start being socialized within a year. They need to be taught what acceptable behavior is and how to behave around family members, kids, the general public and other dogs. Properly socialized Rottweilers will grow up to be loving, even tempered dogs usually. But if they are not properly socialized they could have problems later in life.

4. Puppies, like kids, respond well to routines – The quicker you can establish a routine for your Rottweiler puppy the more comfortable your puppy will be. Just like children Rottweiler puppies enjoy having a routine and thrive when they are given lots of training, lots of exercise, and a solid routine.
5. Give your time some time to adjust – Coming to live in your house is an adjustment for puppy just like it’s an adjustment for your family. Make sure that you give your new puppy some time to adjust to being in a new place with new people.

Feeding and Caring Tips

  • Do not overfeed your Rottie since it attains physical maturity rather slowly and, therefore, must be kept lean.
  • You can judge if your dog is overweight if its waist is not visible or you cannot easily feel its ribs.
  • Overfeeding makes the Rottie more susceptible to torn knee ligaments, shoulder ailments and hip dysplasia.
  • Avoid feeding your Rottie cooked bones, rawhide, sterilized bones or smoked bones. These foods may cause intestinal impaction that can result in need for critical surgery or, in extreme cases, may even lead to death.
  • It is safe to give your Rottie chew toys such as those of the Nylabone and Kong brands, or even real cow hoofs, buffalo leg bones (8" or longer in length) and raw beef, but only after removal of all exterior fat. It is not advisable to give your dog cow ears and pig ears. These can result in illnesses.
  •  Keep the dog without water for an hour after every meal.  This avoids bloating.

Grooming Tips

  • Brush your dog daily, or at least once a week, with a rubber brush or a fine toothcomb. This will reduce hair shedding.
  • Wipe your Rottie’s ears once a week with a cotton ball dampened with a commercial ear cleaner, alcohol, or peroxide.
  • Limit baths to two or fewer every month. Make sure you dry your dog well after every bath.
